Czech Press Photo (CPP) announced that the best photo of the month of March 2020 was the picture by the ČTK photographer Roman Vondrouš. He snapped a woman with a respirator walking over the historic Charles Bridge in Prague. Vondrouš won the same prize last March.
The photograph was taken on Monday, March 17, in the first days after the state of emergency was declared due to coronavirus. "I was sent to photograph a press conference after the City Council Crisis Committee meeting and I decided to stroll on the Charles Bridge for a while before the event.
The photograph was taken very intuitively and with a bit of luck. "I was lucky twice. First piece of luck was that our encounter (with the woman in the picture) took place under the statue of St. John the Baptist, and the second lucky strike was that a flock of birds flew in the sky at the same time. After I checked the picture on the screen I immediately sensed the symbolism of the scene and even some hope and belief in a better tomorrow," Vondrouš said.
Photo of the Month by CPP is an award for journalistic photography that captures an important event of the past month. The aim is to draw attention to the work of professional photographers throughout the year.
In January, another ČTK photographer Luděk Peřina won the award.
