ČTK photographer Roman Vondrouš won the first prize in one of the categories awarded by The International Sports Press Association (AIPS) at its congress in Budapest on Monday.
Vondrouš was selected from 27 finalists out of a total of 1,754 contestants from 125 countries. His series of five photographs from a horse-racing events, his long-term subject matter, won in the Portfolio photography category. The category is defined as a series of three to five photographs that tell a story.
"I am very happy, especially given who my competitors were. People like Cameron Spencer and Adam Pretty are true icons," Vondrouš said.
Vondrouš was born in Pardubice, east Bohemia, the home of the Pardubice steeplechase. He takes part in photography contests regularly, winning first place in the category titled People We Talk About at last year's Czech Press Photo. He won first place in the sports category of the World Press Photo contest in 2013 with his pictures of horse-racing.
