Jizerska 50 among elite long-distance crosscountry skiing races, attracts stars
While last year Jizerska 50 was cancelled due to the lack of snow, this year the 41st most popular long-distance cross-country skiing race in the Czech Republic will probably be the strongest in history, thanks to the participation of such stars as Bjoern Daehlie, Thomas Alsgaard, Martin Koukal and others. The three-day programme in Bedrichov, north Bohemia, will culminate on Sunday with a 50km classical style race that is again part of the FIS Marathon Cup.

Explosion derails train in Russia, authorities accuse terrorists of attack
An explosion of a homemade bomb derailed an express train from Moscow to St Petersburg near Novgorod in the evening on August 13. At least 60 people were injured in the accident and over 20 of them had to be hospitalised. The condition of three patients is serious. The Russian authorities say terrorists are behind the attack. A total of 250 passengers were travelling by the Nevski Express when the accident occurred.
Minneapolis bridge collapse
At least five people died and 60 were injured when a highway bridge over the Mississippi River collapsed during rush hour in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on August 1, 2007. Tonnes of concrete and metal crashed into the water along with 50 to 100 cars and trucks.
The Phoenix mission
The Phoenix probe is to be launched from the Cape Canaveral on August 4. Its main target is to study geological history of the water at Mars and search for evidence of the existence of simple forms of life. The return of the collected samples to the Earth is planned for the time after 2016.
Air crash in Brasil
The crash of the Brazilian TAM flight on July 17, 2007 claimed 189 lives. The plane crashed when landing at the Sao Paulo airport. The police have been investigating the cause of the crash, which is one of the worst aviation accidents in Brazil´s history.

Astronauts from the U.S. Space Shuttle Atlantis installed new solar panels on the International Space Station (ISS) on June 12. The new panels will provide an additional 14 kilowatts of power for the ISS that will be needed when other space shuttle missions will bring new segments to the station.
An accident of Air France´s Concorde plane on July 25, 2000 that claimed the lives of 113 people.
The plane crashed shortly after it took off from Charles de Gaulle airport in Roissy near Paris. The disaster was caused by a broken tyre that punctured the fuel tank. The tyre was broken when it hit a piece of metal on the runway.

Businessman Radovan Krejčíř escaped policemen during the search of a villa in Černošice near Prague on June 18, 2005. According to witnesses, Krejčíř made use of the policemen´s carelessness and left the house through the back door leading to the garden. The camera system allegedly monitored him leaving through a small gate in the upper part of the garden towards the forest. The policemen say Krejčíř then reached a parked car and drove off.

German Tornado fighter crashes in Switzerland.
The German air force´s Tornado fighter-bomber crashed into a rock slope in the Swiss Alps on April 12. One pilot died in the crash, the other suffered injuries.
The aircraft was returning to Germany from the French island of Corsica where it took part in an exercise.

Sparta Praha beat Slavia Praha 1-0 in a Prague football derby on April 23. Pavel Horváth scored the sole goal one hour after the match started.
Chess
The 19th game of a match between two chess legends, Garry Kasparov (white pieces) and Anatoly Karpov, which they played during the World Championships in then Leningrad in 1986. Kasparov won 5-4 with 15 draws and became world champion.
