 | Jizerska 50 among elite long-distance crosscountry skiing races, attracts stars While last year Jizerska 50 was cancelled due to the lack of snow, this year the 41st most popular long-distance cross-country skiing race in the Czech Republic will probably be the strongest in history, thanks to the participation of such stars as Bjoern Daehlie, Thomas Alsgaard, Martin Koukal and others. The three-day programme in Bedrichov, north Bohemia, will culminate on Sunday with a 50km classical style race that is again part of the FIS Marathon Cup. |

 | Explosion derails train in Russia, authorities accuse terrorists of attack An explosion of a homemade bomb derailed an express train from Moscow to St Petersburg near Novgorod in the evening on August 13. At least 60 people were injured in the accident and over 20 of them had to be hospitalised. The condition of three patients is serious. The Russian authorities say terrorists are behind the attack. A total of 250 passengers were travelling by the Nevski Express when the accident occurred. |
